A Quarantine Project: Harmony #14 — REGENT SQUARE

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: REGENT SQUARE

Voices United #36 is "Angels, from the Realms of Glory," to Henry Smart's tune Regent Square. I've played some of Smart's organ music, and I quite like it. Not going to win any awards for shocking the establishment or rocking the public, but it's still solid music.

So I set it in 5-part harmony, SSATB. The second soprano and alto toss the melody back and forth a bit, but it's all there.

So here's the thing I made. PDF link in caption.

Files that link for hymn arrangements to be sung by choirs in five

Skip ahead a number and we get #38, with the tune Gloria. It's a fun one, I'm curious to see what I'll do with it.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #13 — IN DULCI JUBILO

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: IN DULCI JUBILO

At #35 of Voices United we find the famous Christmas tune, "In sweet celebration," most commonly used with the words "Good Christian Men/Friends, Rejoice," In Dulci Jubilo has a setting here for three-part women's voices, although it needn't be so restrictive as that. It's set with melody in the lower staff and two-part harmony in the upper staff, but the voices cross one another regularly and readily.

As usual, click the caption for a PDF download.
So here's the thing I did:

A PDF is here, so click this without fear

Further in is Regent Square, a good, solid Victorian tune, #36 in the book. That'll be fun.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #12 — ST THEODULPH

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization and fauxbourdon: ST THEODULPH

Another old German tune, with a text ("O Lord, How Shall I Meet Thee") that is a translation by Catherine Winkworth of words by Paul Gerhardt which make up the last Advent selection that I'll be reharmonizing in Voices United (#31).
Maybe if this mess lasts long enough, I'll get around to the Advent section of another hymnal. We'll see.

Anyway, here's the thing I did. PDF link in the caption.

Click here and find a download, a link for PDF

So next, In Dulci Jubilo, Voices United #35.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #11 — CRÜGER (fauxbourdon)

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization and fauxbourdon: CRÜGER

Since we're still in Advent, we have "Hail to the Lord's Annointed," with the tune Crüger, #30 in the Voices United hymnal. So, to avoid getting too tired of just writing harmonies, I gave it new harmony and a fauxbourdon treatment - the melody's down in the tenor.

So here's the thing I did. Link to a PDF in the caption of the picture.

And here you find the caption that's linked unto the file.

What follows is #31, St. Theodulph, which (much like Away In a Manger earlier) is generally more commonly associated with another time of year. Palm Sunday, in this case.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #10 — RICHMOND

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: RICHMOND

Richmond, to the text of "Hark the Glad Sound" at #29 in the Voices United hymnal, gets a... well, un-glad harmony. Thought I'd minor-key the tune, without thinking about the words, but hey, whatever, the text isn't the exercise!

As usual, click the caption on the picture for a link to a PDF.
So here's the thing.

Hark here the link! Click for the score, the promised PDF
Actually get two back-to-back; next is #30, Cruger.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #9 — NEANDER

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: NEANDER (UNSER HERRSCHER)

And we're back. From no accidentals, to as many as I can cram in to twelve bars, give or take. Still in Advent, this is #28 from Voices United, "Herald, Sound the Note of Gladness," and that note might be any one of the twelve, really. The tune is Neander, and it's a solid tune. The range makes writing harmonies for it a challenge sometimes.

Anyway, here's the thing I did.

Here's a PDF to link to, digital copy of the song.
Sure is something, huh.

VU #29 is next. Richmond. So many options...

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #8 — HELMSLEY

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: HELMSLEY

Forgive me, for I have sinned, and have written a Baroque tune with post-Romantic chromaticism (See previous post). As penance, I have adopted modalism and taken Voices United Hymn #25, "Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending," to the tune Helmsley, in Renaissance modality.

Eh, kind of.

There are here no accidentals, and the only tonality required is the final cadence. Because I wanted a challenge, and limiting one's self to seven of the twelve available notes and somewhat awkward voice-leading is a challenge for me.

So here's all that stuff I did. Link to a PDF in the caption.

Lo, here links a file for download...

Anyway, skip forward a bit, and next up is Voices United #28, Neander.
See you then.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #7 — WINCHESTER NEW

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: WINCHESTER NEW

So if your harmony parts get bored with their time in isolation...
Voices United #20 is "On Jordan's Bank," to the tune Winchester New, and you might be asking what happened to #s 10 through 19, well, they're all either text-only, or modern tunes that are still in copyright, so I'm not too worried about them

This was just one of those, I kind of looked at it and said, "This needs some weird chromaticism." So now it has it.

Here's the thing. PDF link in the caption!

On this here link do click, they cry, the PDF is found thereby

So now we skip forth to one of my favourites: #25, Helmsley.
Until then!

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #6 — BESANÇON

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: BESANÇON

Number nine, but no revolution. Voices United hymn #9 is "People, Look East! The Time is Near," to the fun French folk ... song (I couldn't think of a synonym for 'song' that started with an 'f') given the tune name Besançon.
Personally I like this one to fly on its own, but I think this harmony may need a more measure pace than I prefer.
External Mediafire link to the PDF in the description.

PDF here! Just click the link! It should work by now, I think.

For my next magic trick, I'm going to make ten numbers disappear! Everything between #10 and #19 is ineligible for my work, either just being a prayer in (copyrighted) text or being too modern (and thus still under copyright). So #20, Winchester New, is up.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #5 — LO HOW A ROSE

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #5 — LO HOW A ROSE

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: ES IST EIN' ROS

Voices United #8, Advent music. An old, old German tune, with a new, new harmony. It'll be fun. Or, at least, I think it'll be fun. I think it is fun, frankly.
I don't know. I don't have a lot to say, so here's a bit of music, with a PDF link in caption.
Lo, how a link e'er clicking // a PDF doth link

Besançon comes next! A fun little French folk melody.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #4 — AWAY in a MANGER

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #4 — AWAY IN A MANGER

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: AWAY IN A MANGER

Yep, you read right. Voices United #6, still in the Advent section, is "A Candle is Burning," to the tune Away in a Manger, and so it's next on my list. James R. Murray put this tune out there in 1887, and I've done stuff with it before (not to mention the text) but this is a fresh harmonization this 25th of March, because why not.

As usual, there's a link to a PDF in the caption of the photo.

PDFs! PDFs! It's a ... file format used to share documents!

Next... hmmm... not #7, it's copyright 1989, so... #8. Es ist ein' Ros. Now there's a challenge.

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #3 — COVID, a new tune by Vladimir Antonov-Charsky

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #3 — Covid

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

Original harmonization: COVID

COVID is a new tune by Vladimir Antonov-Charsky, using the text "In Grief and Fear, to thee, O Lord" by William Bullock.

The text is somewhat appropriate to the news of the day.

So here's the thing I did.

PDF link! PDF link!

I didn't write the tune. If you're interested in the tune, or use of the piece, contact Vladimir at alvirdimus@gmail.com

If you want to see the original composition, here's a YouTube link.

And of course, there's a PDF link in the description for my harmony!

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #2 — Stuttgart

SO WE'RE ALL STILL STUCK INSIDE

reharmonization: Stuttgart

Voices United #2 is "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus," set to the tune Stuttgart, from the Psalmodia Sacra of 1715. So, yes, very much in the public domain.

So here's a reharmonization. I went a little chromatic. This is not unusual for me.

So here's the thing I did.

Click here for a PDF of the same.

Next up... #3 is a French text that uses the tune, #4  is David Young's 1988 tune Whittlesey, and #5 is Alberto Taulé's 1972 self-named tune, so next up will be #6, which is Away in a Manger. While it is usually connected to a Christmas text, in this book it is not. So it's next!

A Quarantine Project: Harmony #1 — Veni Emmanuel

SO WE'RE ALL STUCK INSIDE...

but it's a chance to do some harmonizing.

So, I have this hymnal. These hymnals. Lots of them. Since Voices United was sitting nearby, it goes first. I'm going to harmonize, or re-harmonize, every public domain tune within the book, bit by bit. Minimum one a day.

So. Veni Emmanuel is Voices United hymn #1

And here's The Thing I Did.
