Hymn-A-Week #19

Crazy busy. In a play. There were two family weddings last week, one requiring a trip to Saskatoon. I am ill with the flu. Here's a hymn

Prelude in A-flat Minor

Inspired unquestionably by the Prelude in B-flat Minor from Shostakovich's Op. 87 (in the structure) and the Prelude and Fugue in E Minor from Kabalevski's Op. 61 (in the theme); despite drawing inspiration from two of my favourite works from two of my favourite Russian composers, though, I still feel there's something that's ... not quite done with this one. Perhaps I'll revisit it at a later date (maybe to add a fugue?), but for now I have a deadline to meet!

Hymn-A-Week #18

Alright, so we're pushing the bounds of theoretical good taste here. It's kind of in B-flat major, but mostly because of the last two chords. It's sort of tonal, but only because it remains (mostly) triadic. Bach would likely have rejected it; cadencing in E minor from B-flat major is really not appropriate, nor is a B-natural against a B-flat no matter what the voice-leading is doing.

Here it is, nonetheless.

Prelude in A-flat Major

Various life events conspired to keep this little toccata from being completed last week. So it's done for this week. The Prelude in A-flat, seventeenth in the series.

Hymn-A-Week #17

I just looked at the numbers on the bottom of the page in the hymnal, not even what hymn it was. 8 7 8 7, twice over.

So I cooked up a little dance-tune and harmonized it. Içi.

Hymn-A-Week #16

So again I went to my hymnal and there found "Thou, who at Thy First Eucharist Didst Pray," which is a rhythm I hadn't used before - six 10s

A little while later, I took a couple harmonic left turns and here I was.

Prelude in G Minor

Two-thirds of the way through the keys, and I hit a bit of a block here, in that I've used up an idea I wasn't sure about in a way I wasn't too sure of. So this wound up a bit unusual, and I'm not sure if I like it yet. But! The fun of a deadline, even one which is self-imposed, is that the work must be done when it must be done.

So here's a PDF of the Prelude in G Minor, and the images are below.
